Emotions are as much a part of the workplace as the air we breathe. Happiness, surprise, frustration, anger— they are all there and more. Emotions play a role in the choices we make and actions we take. Directed emotions can motivate, inspire, and add positive intensity to our work. When strong emotions leave our control, or “run away,” our personal productivity and the productivity of others suffers. Key relationships in our network are damaged, making it even harder to maintain necessary focus. Individuals who take the initiative to stay on top of their own emotional reactions and help others to do the same have a positive impact on productivity, relationships, the overall atmosphere of the workplace, and their personal well-being.

Understanding ourselves will enable us to communicate more effectively with co-workers and those we serve, it will help us build relationships, resolve conflict and solve problems which, in turn will benefit the organisation for which we work.

 WHAT IS PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS?

Personal effectiveness means making the most at all personal resources at our disposal - our personal talents, energy and time relative to what's most important to us. It is like money management or investments - we want to get the best return on our resources. As with managing money, we can either drift through life making ad hoc decisions or we can set time aside periodically to review our investments. It's not about sacrificing spontaneity or opportunism to be super organized if this is not your style, but more a matter of taking whatever steps fit your style to give you the feeling that you are making best use of your talents, energy and time.

Being successful is in the eyes of the beholder - for some it means having a satisfying personal life, for others it is some form of career success that drives them. The only right answer is the one that makes you happy.

When we understand the relationship between our own values, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours  and understand how these beliefs influence another’s perception of us we are able to develop strategies for changing 'limiting' beliefs to 'empowering' beliefs.

An empowered and enlightened individual is one who is positive and has a strong sense of self worth and love for oneself. When this happens we are able to be present, creative and exercise an abundance mentality that filters through to others and generates positivity. We are then better equipped to handle customer complaints, conflict situations and redeem ourselves when things go wrong.

Positive thinking is a lifetime commitment of making your dreams come true by being honest, courteous, kind and up beat with yourself and others. We learn positive thinking by controlling our thoughts, and actively pushing the negative thoughts out of our minds with the tools of positive thinking. Once we start using the power of positive thinking, we must keep our minds attentive of what is important to us, while keeping sight of our purpose and main concerns in our thoughts and deeds. Once positive energy is activated naturally, the law of attraction kicks in to bring into your life the results of your practice of positive thinking.

The law of attraction states that what you focus on, you are attracting into your life. When you have a positive attitude on life, you will eventually attract the positive things in life. How does it work?

Thinking positively means you are unfazed by life’s obstacle. In fact, you will not see it as an obstacle but an opportunity. As you wake up every morning with a smile in your face and look forward to the rest of the day with gusto, you will attract positive occurrence throughout the day. People are attracted to you, they want to work with you, do business with you and they want to hang around you.

A positive attitude is also a healthy attitude. You feel purposeful and fulfilled. Your happiness can be seen in your posture; you stand and walk tall, you have a healthy glow in your face and you feel confident.

Soon your positive attitude and determination will also become an encouragement for others to follow. People look up to you and your positive way of life rubs off on them; they too want to be a positive and happy person.
